MANILA, Philippines — Rain or Shine rewarded veteran big man Beau Belga a fresh one-year extension deal on Wednesday, the team posted on its official social media accounts.
The 37-year-old Belga signed the new deal in the presence of Rain or Shine’s team governor Atty. Mamerto Mondragon and assistant team manager Jireh Ibanez.
Belga, now in his 13th season with the Asian Coating franchise, thanked management and coach Yeng Guiao for their trust and confidence.
The former Philippine Christian U standout said their strong bond since he came into the team during the 2010-11 season, contributed to his longevity with the franchise, which he helped win two PBA championships along the way.
“I think our strong bond with the bosses (Raymund Yu and Terry Que) and with coach Yeng…and then also how I was able to play well during the past season, perhaps, that’s the reason I got the extension (deal),” Belga told the Manila Times in Filipino.
While Belga now has to play restricted minutes due to the presence of import Aaron Fuller and the need to split time with Keith Datu and rookie Caelan Tiongson, the Gubat, Sorsogon native said he is well aware of his role with the ROS team.
“My role is to guide them,” Belga said, referring to young bigs like Datu, Tiongson, and even Luis Villegas, who has been used sparingly at the moment as he recovers from a knee surgery last year. “And again, if coach Yeng lets me play, I also need to be ready.”
Rain or Shine on Tuesday, returned to its winning ways after spanking Phoenix, 122-107 for its fifth win in six starts.
The win moved the Elasto Painters to their goal of securing a playoff spot in the Governors’ Cup.
