(UPDATE) SAN Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R) came alive in the fourth frame to beat Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 91-84, to take its first win in the NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball tournament at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Sunday.
Paeng Are led the scoring for the Golden Stags with his 30-point outing, along with six rebounds, six assists, and a steal.
His late game heroics helped San Sebastian to overcome Letran in the fourth frame.
Are is the first player in NCAA Season 100 to hit the 30-point mark.
Down by 12 points at the end of the third quarter, the Golden Stags slowly trimmed Letran’s lead to one, 81-80, in the fourth frame.
Are, who already had four fouls, went hard inside the paint to give SSC-R the advantage, 82-81.
The Golden Stags went hot down the stretch of the fourth canto as Tristan Felebrico fired a triple, and Christian Ricio put up a layup for an 86-81 lead.
Already having the momentum on their side, Are went for a jumper, and Felebrico scored a two-pointer, 91-81, to further widen the gap.
San Sebastian scored 28 points in the fourth quarter alone, while Letran only scored nine.
Meanwhile, NCAA management committee chief Hercules Callanta of Lyceum of the Philippines University addressed the mauling incident during the opening of the league on Saturday.
“Well, actually yes there was an untoward incident after the CSB (De La Salle-College of St. Benilde), and MU (Mapua University) game,” he said in an interview with Anton Roxas.
“The officials while they were on their way to their quarters, one of them was accosted by someone we don’t know the identity yet of the person.”
The episode happened just minutes after Blazers come-from-behind win over the Cardinals.
“We are still looking at MoA, providing some videos, CCTV Videos, as far on what really transpired. So the referee was mauled, he sustained physical injuries on his face. He was already subjected to medico-legal.”
“But as far as the details is concerned, we do not have any details yet, snippets of what happened. But we have to verify this,” he added.
